How Well Do You Know Your Car in Adverse Weather Conditions?

Sometimes all of the technological gadgetry in our newer vehicles may lull us into a false sense of security. Sadly, all-wheel drive, traction control, Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) will only go so far. They are in place to protect you in case of a boo-boo, but can only do so much if you are pushing them beyond their limit. The BMW 5 series that died here on this video has been pushed beyond that threshold to the point of no return.

History
We are a multiple BMW household with vehicles ranging from the 1970's 2002, the 1984 e28, the 1998 540i (like what is in the video), and the newer e60. I can tell you that they are quite forgiving if you make a mistake -- you don't realize just how large of a car they are until you remove any of the electronic nannies (in BMW's case, ASC or DSC). As for the older ones (which I prefer to drive), you just have to know how to drive the car, especially in the case of severe weather conditions.

Decisions, decisions....
While leaving our house in Louisville, KY, one particularly heavily snowy morning, I had a choice: drive the e39 540i, the e34 525i or the e46 325Xi. My first thought was to take out the 525i, as the other two BMWs were lowered, had plus-sized aftermarket wheels and low-profile all-season tires, while the 525i was pretty much stock. There was a good 5" of snow on the ground and the snow plow had yet to make its way to our cul-de-sac.

First up, the 525i. This automatic car lacked traction control gadgetry to limit wheel spin. As our house was located at the base of a long hill, you can imagine the "fun" we had driving this car in snow. But I knew it would take forever to gently modulate the throttle and try to push its way to the top of the hill. I made it, though. Drove about another 1/2 mile, and decided to head back. I felt like I was in Tokyo drift - not enough torque or the proper rubber to make it happen effectively.

Next was the 540i. This car was such a joy to drive in the rain and dry climates, I figured, why not? When I first came to visit Kentucky from Atlanta, a huge snow storm hit me on I-65 and I made it to Louisville just fine - rims and all! This car handled the snow pretty well. I went to the top of the street, modulating the power, and at the same time, having more of it on tap made it easier to get it up the hill.

I got to the same spot, turned around, and for bits and giggles decided to pull out the 325Xi. Since this car was the all-wheel drive car in the house, this would be interesting. Let me tell you, not only did it have more than enough power to get us up the hill and around the corner, it did this effortlessly. Even with the low-profile tires and lowered suspension. In fact, this car was a lifesaver, as it made short work of the commute to the office, whereas the other cars could have made it with more effort.

Now, that was just one day. There were many other days that I had to deal with large amounts of snow, and the other BMW vehicles handled just fine. The point I want to make is that you must know how to drive your car in the weather conditions like we are facing today. Unfortunately, the gentleman in the video lost his car due to a fire started by his ignorance, and how not to get into trouble. What would you have done? I can tell you this is not BMW's fault. It is not a fault of rear-wheel drive. The same can happen to a 4x4, AWD or FWD car if handled incorrectly. I know from my experience of driving these cars for almost 20 years that you have to listen to what the car is telling you, and adapt accordingly.

You have the right car...now what?

Well, some people think that you can't make a good thing any better than it is.

If you look at this new BMW e92 M3 that we have here with AutoArt Forged wheels (Model VYC), you can see it did not take much to get that look we were going for.

At 502 MotorSports, we have a slightly different view. You see, you can sip wine out of a plastic red cup, or you can sip it out of a beautiful, crystal glass. the contents are the same, but the experience is much different.

It is the same thing with modifying your car...sure, you can keep it stock. But then, when more people on the Hwy 111 in Palm Springs, CA or Lenox Road in Buckhead look exactly like you do...then what?

Or worse yet, you are in a nice, high-end mall, such as Phipps Plaza, and walk up to the wrong Bentley Coupe. You know you pressed the "unlock" button on your key fob, but it is not opening the door. OH! That's right. You backed in. This is pulled in. So where in bloody hell is your car??

A car like that would do good with an upgraded suspension from 502 MotorSports to lower the center of gravity, (either lowering springs/matched struts/shocks) and some sway bars/strut tower bars to bring it back to neutral. Now, if you want to make it faster, we can always do a supercharger for instant acceleration and fun, and a nice custom catback exhaust to get the belches out . See? That is why I said add those three-piece wheels...we are going to need something to get the power down to the ground and prevent glazing the tires every time we hit the "Go" pedal.

Have you ever seen a vehicle on the road that looked absolutely atrocious?

Meaning, you were wondering what on earth they were thinking? Or, in the sense of the VW Rabbit to our left, WTF were they thinking?

There is a time to make a statement, and customize your vehicle....and then there is just craziness...if you look at the picture below...you can see how this guy decided to add negative camber to his vehicle.

This serves absolutely no purpose at all...unless you count being "different".

He basically added longer threaded bolts to the lower control arm, and loosened up who knows what else...and got what we see above. Well, the police did not find it humorous....they impounded said vehicle. At least they did something good for us...that would have been a bad

look, on sooo many levels.

This is a 2006 BMW 325i (e90). We did the following:

-European Headlight Upgrade (labor intensive: requires removal of front end of car)

Not bad for her first modified vehicle!

She was so thrilled that she had some pics taken and sent them our way.

This car came out quite well, and to her surprise, performed as good as her car did with the factory wheels on it (16").

Dealing with the Issues: Obama

DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama called his acceptance speech on Thursday "the American Promise." It included a list of promises for change that he said, "We need right now."

Sen. Barack Obama addresses the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado.

Here is a look at what Obama said he would do, if elected, about a variety of topics:

Taxes

Obama said he would:
• Cut taxes "for 95 percent of all working families."
• "Eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses" and start-ups "that will create the high-wage, high-tech jobs of tomorrow."
• Advocate "a tax code that doesn't reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it."
• "Stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas" and "start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America."

Energy

Obama said he would:
• Set a goal that "in 10 years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East."
• "Tap natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology and find ways to safely harness nuclear power."
• "Help our auto companies retool, so that the fuel-efficient cars of the future are built right here in America."
• Make it easier for Americans to afford U.S.-built, fuel-efficient cars.

Today marks the seven year anniversary of the attacks against our country. 9/11/2008 may serve as a reminder of where we were early that morning seven years ago, but it should also remind us to continue in the same manner (not frightful, not scared, not defeated - but patriotic, loving, respectful, endearing, Pro-USA, anti-hate)....you know, like we were from 9/12/01 to 5/26/02.

Let's get back to loving one another - and bond together as one. Frankly, the hate and division spewing out of this presidential election is beyond old, not to mention the old mud-slinging tactics. Let's wake up, and beat the REAL enemy.

Dealing with the issues: McCain

" Hi,Not sure if this is or is not the 'norm' but I just received my brand new iPhone here in the UK and once it had been activated on iTunes I found that the home screen (the screen you can personalise with a photo) already had a photo set against it !!!!It would appear that someone on the production line was having a bit of fun - has anyone else found this?"

She does not face any disciplinary action, however there has been talk that others wanted to return their iPhones for the "autographed" ones by these factory workers. They feel it is a nice touch to know that your phone is up to snuff, and to see who did the work.

DENVER (Reuters) - To shouts of "Yes we can," Democrats nominated Barack Obama on Wednesday as their presidential candidate in a historic first for a black American, backed by his ex-rivals Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Obama made his first appearance at the Democratic National Convention, stepping out on stage after his vice presidential running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, attacked Republican John McCain as he accepted the nomination as No. 2 on the ticket."I think the convention has gone pretty well so far. What do you think?" Obama said to cheering delegates after hugging Biden and his wife Jill on stage.

Former President Bill Clinton, who has been slow to warm to Obama after his wife lost a bruising primary battle, worked to encourage party unity by giving Obama an unwavering seal of approval in a speech to a packed convention hall.

Delegates cheered Clinton's appearance for so long that he asked them to sit down."My fellow Democrats, I say to you: Barack Obama is ready to lead America and to restore American leadership in the world," the former president told flag-waving delegates who interrupted him repeatedly with roars of approval."Barack Obama is ready to be president of the United States," he said.

Biden laid down withering fire on McCain that some Democrats have said has been lacking. He specifically cited McCain's opposition to Obama's demand for setting a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq and said even the Bush administration and the Iraqi government were on the verge of setting a date to bring troops home."John McCain was wrong, and Barack Obama was right," Biden said.

As they passed the torch to Obama, the Clintons were in the spotlight.

In an earlier, emotional show of unity, Sen. Hillary Clinton strode onto the floor of the party's national convention during a roll call of the states and formally asked Democratic delegates to suspend their count and approve Obama's nomination by acclamation.

"With eyes firmly fixed on the future, in the spirit of unity, with the goal of victory, with faith in our party and our country, let's declare together in one voice right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president," she said to raucous cheers.

Her request was quickly accepted by the convention's presiding official, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California.

When Pelosi pounded a gavel to declare Obama the nominee, delegates held hands together up high, danced and swayed back and forth to the song "Love Train" in celebration."Yes we can," the crowd chanted. "Obama!"

REMARKABLE MOMENT

It was a remarkable moment for Obama, the son of a black father from Kenya and white mother from Kansas who was raised in humble beginnings and began his relatively short political career as a community organizer in Chicago.

Four years ago he gave a stirring keynote speech to the Democratic national convention as a U.S. Senate candidate with no national experience. But that speech propelled him in a rapid political rise that ended with the nomination.In honor of Clinton's tenacity and to try to encourage party unity, delegates had earlier granted the gesture of symbolically nominating Clinton for the candidacy.

The Clintons' coordinated moves to help Obama could prove important toward binding the wounds from the Clinton-Obama battle that split the two camps and left some Clinton supporters vowing not to support Obama.

It could also help Hillary Clinton avoid blame should Obama lose to McCain this year and position herself as the go-to Democratic candidate in the 2012 election.

In any event Obama was pleased, saying Hillary Clinton had "rocked the house" in her speech on Tuesday and that Bill Clinton "reminded us of what it's like when you actually put people first."

Obama's nomination formally set the 47-year-old senator on track to face McCain in the November 4 election in a race that has been neck-and-neck for weeks, with McCain's Republican nominating convention to take place next week in the Minnesota city of St. Paul.

Bill Clinton, a master politician who stumbled this year in trying to help his wife, noted that when he first ran for president in 1992, Republicans then, as now, suggested the Democratic candidate was too inexperienced to be president."Sound familiar? I like being white.

Generally speaking, it's the easiest color in America to be.

It's so easy being white that when someone discriminates against me because I'm white, it's called "reverse" racism. My racism has its own special name -- that's how cool it is to be white. I can walk into any store without being followed; hail the cab of my choice; and there's not a country club that wouldn't welcome me, so long as I was clad in the requisite slacks and collared shirt.

I'm a liberal, college-educated white guy. I think gays should be allowed to marry, I think women deserve equal pay for equal work, and I firmly believe that the more ethnically diverse America becomes, the more perfect and lasting our Union will be.

But there's something about the idea of a black president that scares the shit out of me.

Until now, the notion of a black chief executive has belonged exclusively to Hollywood. I remember seeing Morgan Freeman in Deep Impact, and thinking what a cool, novel choice it was to cast a black man as the president of the United States. Cool, because it hit my progressive sweet spot. "Yes! That's the way the world should work!" Novel, because the idea seemed impossible. And that was scarcely ten years ago.

But the idea is very real now. A black man may well become the leader of the free world. And even for someone who fancies himself a progressive, that's forced me to take a long, hard look at what that would really mean to my white mind. To identify that tiny, obscure part of me that's suddenly afraid, and find out what its problem is.

Here's what I found.

It's been easy believing in equality, because part of me -- the part that's suddenly afraid -- didn't really think we'd ever achieve it.

For as long as I can remember, I've felt secure as a white person. Secure in the unspoken belief that no matter how much social progress we made in America -- no matter how many blacks and Latinos graduated Magna Cum Laude or how many trophies Tiger won -- that we'd always be the ruling class from sea to shining sea.

That belief was so ingrained in my DNA that nothing could shake it loose. Not the first billionaires of color, not the surging growth of the Latino population, not the Congressional Black Caucus...not even Oprah.

For though my better angels usually won the day, and though I was happy with the strides America was making, I was also -- deep down in that DNA -- gratified by the knowledge that mine was still the easiest color in America to be.

But a black president? That's different.

A black president means anything is possible. It means that that last little parcel of earth -- which for 232 years has been solely inhabited by white men -- is now open to people of all colors. That may seem insignificant. After all, there are black CEOs, black movie stars, black Senators...but the "highest office in the land" is just that.

The problem is, I think there are untold numbers of whites who can't bring themselves to pull the lever for Obama because of that fear -- the fear that a black president somehow takes us white folks down a notch.

I have friends and family members who support Obama as I do, but who are "certain" he won't win in November for this very reason. They just don't think white America is ready to pull that lever. Ready to put their vote where their mouth is.

Some of these hypothetical people are simply racists. People who've let that fear consume them, and who would never vote for a black candidate no matter what. Others are like me -- whites who embrace equality, and who've loved people of all colors with all their hearts, but who (somewhere deep down in that DNA) are afraid of what this brave new world will look like. Of what their place in it will -- or won't -- be.

As for me? I don't think we've arrived in a "post-racial" America just yet, but I have faith that more of us white folks are ready to give it a try than ever before.

I guess we'll see how big those better angels have grown.

Strange Printer Problem

I recently purchased an HP Printer, and when I stay in the room when it's printing, it works perfectly. However, nearly every time I leave the room while a print job is in progress and come back a bit later, I find all the papers come out wrinkled, sometimes even shredded, with blurred ink.

How was this girl raped, and nothing was done until April 28th? Are we missing something?

ST. ANTHONY, Idaho -- A man has been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl who later gave birth to a baby girl in eastern Idaho.

The girl gave birth less than two weeks ago by caesarian section at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg, Fremont County Sheriff Ralph C. Davis and other authorities said.

"I wouldn't have believed a 10-year-old could conceive in the first place," Davis said.
A hospital spokeswoman would not discuss the condition of the girl or the baby and would not say whether either was still in the hospital Wednesday.

The story was first reported by KIDK-TV.
St. Anthony police began investigating on April 28 after medical personnel alerted police that a pregnant child had come in for treatment.
Guadalupe Gutierrez-Juarez, 37, of St. Anthony, was arrested the same day, Police Chief James Smith said.

"We had good information from witnesses," Smith said.
In documents that were filed April 29 in 7th District Court and obtained by The Associated Press, Gutierrez-Juarez is charged with one count of rape. He remained in jail with bail set at $250,000 pending a preliminary hearing May 13.

Authorities said Gutierrez-Juarez did not have legal documentation to live in the United States. His home town and nationality were not immediately clear, but police said they had received no complaints about him before investigating the pregnancy.
The investigation was continuing. Smith would not give details on the condition of the girl but said additional counts of rape could be filed.

"The prosecutor is still considering doing that," he said.
Prosecutor Karl H. Lewies did not return telephone calls Wednesday from The AP.
It's unclear who would take custody of the newborn or what will happen to the 10-year-old mother.

Child protection laws prohibit the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare from confirming whether the agency was contacted about the case, spokesman Tom Shanahan said.
"In a situation like that, we probably would be contacted by the hospital," Shanahan said. "If there was a crime committed we would be working with local law enforcement."
If the girl's home is found to be unsafe, a custody hearing would be held immediately and the courts would decide where to place her, Shanahan said.

"If they decide the child needs foster care, we would do that immediately," he said.
While a 10-year-old giving birth is highly unusual, it is not impossible, said Laurie Krieger, a medical anthropologist in Washington D.C.

"We do know that girls in the U.S. are menstruating sooner," a development which can speed up the production of sex hormones and make pregnancy possible earlier than might have been thought likely, Kreiger said.

Nutrition, body mass and other factors, including the fact that children in the United States weigh more than in past generations, contribute to early menstruation, she added.

I loved how we always said that the things that were done prior to his purchase of the Legend were "Inspiration". Trust me, his, and many others were awesome renditions of Acura Legends. I still think that the 91-96 Legend are the best looking Legends ever. I do not have my coupe anymore, (aka Jasmyn), but I get to missing her all the time. A lot of blood, sweat, tears and $$$$$ went into making her the Legend she is.

Before this really takes off, we wanted to say thank you to our folks at the Acura-Legend.com and the ClubLexus.com forums.

These are great sources of information, and I enjoy providing a service to the members at both locations. I am a Super Moderator at Acura-Legend.com, and a Moderator at ClubLexus.com. I have been at these two online communities for many, many years....made lots of acquaintances and friends, and enjoyed some really great times.

Car guys/gals are the best! (Thanks AL/CL!)

Anyways, I do not want to ramble....

But I would like for you all that are out there is this: let us know what you would like to see more of in your automotive community.

Maybe we can work on making it come to life for you (trust me, this is something we had to do in the Legend community where almost everything is homemade or pre-engineered by the "OG's" and then finally somewhat mass-produced).

Another OG - model/drift Queen, Ms. Emerald - she has added forced induction to her SC400 (psst...that is the V8 version, not the inline-6 that is shared with the Supra), modified 140123 times, and does the work herself! That is hot!! Thanks Emerald - she has always been a sweetie to me, so another plus.

In a nutshell....what are your realistic desires? What are you willing to sacrifice or provide to make them happen?
